Published: Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Police have detained a man on suspicion of attempting to stab a transient outside the Rose Bowl Saturday.

Gabriel Arroyo, 41, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, after engaging in an altercation with a homeless man just west of the Rose Bowl, as people gathered in preparation for Independence Day fireworks around 5:30 p.m.

Arroyo pulled a knife on the transient, who then defended himself by striking him on the head with a piece of wood. Arroyo was not seriously hurt and is now being held in lieu of $30,000 bail. His court date is still pending.
