K-9 Officer Art to Retire his Leash

Published: Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

On Thursday, January 14th, K-9 Officer “Art” will publicly hang up his badge, retire his department issued leash and head into retirement leaving his partner and handler, Officer Brown behind to continue on with their good work. Art suffered an injury from which he could not fully recover and therefore will retire. The media and community are invited along with the department and about a dozen other K-9 comrades and partners from around the region to bid farewell to Art. There will also be a special recognition for K9 handler Officer Brown. The party will be held at the Pasadena Police Department’s Air Operations Heliport, 2175 Yucca Lane, Altadena, 5:30 p.m.
“A K-9 officer and his partner are inseparable,” says Interim Chief of Police Christopher Vicino. “They live together, train together and work together. They are a team with a specialized response that cannot be matched. Whether searching for suspects, searching for victims, or providing an educational presentation to school children, K-9’s and their handlers are a critical tool in policing. The work they accomplish cannot be understated. The K-9’s become just as much of the community as their human partners.”
Officer Tom Brown, Art’s partner of the last 9 years, and Art will be recognized for their service to the community by the Mayor, City Manager, and Interim Chief of Police.
