9th Annual Parade Watch Begins…Pasadena PD Volunteers are Eyes and Ears of Force

Published: Monday, December 28th, 2009

Pasadena Interim Chief of Police, Christopher Vicino, announced that beginning Tuesday, December 29, 2009, the Pasadena Police Department’s Volunteers will begin the 9th Annual Parade Watch. “We believe that this national award winning volunteer program is a contributing factor to increased safety and decreased arrests along the parade route over the last few years,” says Chief Vicino. “This unique and effective program is based on the model of community involvement and communication. By using the technology now available such as cell phones and giving people the means and encouragement to call suspicious and disruptive behavior in to the department, law enforcement officers can respond more rapidly before problems escalate.”
Anyone planning to camp in RV’s along the Tournament of Roses Parade route should expect Pasadena Police Department volunteers and employees to contact them to individually discuss the concept of the Parade Watch Program. All vehicles parked within one block of the parade route may be subject to search. People are asked not to leave vehicles parked unattended overnight within one block of the parade route. Unattended vehicles may be subject to enforcement under the City’s overnight parking ordinance, which may include towing.
In appreciation for the compliance of the individuals parked adjacent to the route, Pasadena Police representatives will place a commemorative 2010 Pasadena Police Department, Parade Watch decal on the lower left window of the parked vehicle.
The Police Department also asks that people in proximity of the parade route report any suspicious people, activity, vehicles or circumstances by calling (626) 744-4241. “The cooperation of the public in helping with our security efforts is what will once again make the Tournament of Roses parade a safe and memorable experience for all who come to see it,” says Chief Vicino.
