Newly elected Pasadena City Councilman Terry Tornek was sworn in as the new District 7 representative replacing the longtime officeholder Sid Tyler at Monday evening’s council meeting and reorganization.
Tornek replaces three-term councilmember Sid F. Tyler Jr., who announced last February that he would not be seeking re-election and subsequently endorsed Tornek.
This night, however, belonged to Tyler. Accolades from every corner of the council chambers including state and local officials as well as some friendly, albeit respectful, ribbing from fellow council members.
During his farewell speech, Tyler joked that he was going to plant the small tree he had on his desk right there in council chambers – referring, of course, to his championship of all things green in the recent and on-going battle over the removal of trees along Colorado Blvd.. To many, Tyler was lovingly known as a ‘tree hugger’, stnading firm as the city’s only elected official in opposition to the tree removals.
The swearing in of Tyler’s replacement, Terry Tornek, also included Chris Holden and Victor Gordo who would be later elected as the new vice mayor.
Tornek defeated Margaret York, the former Los Angeles County Police Chief, in an April run off election, 1,087 to 937 votes.
