Hero pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger has been named as the 2010 Rose Parade grand marshal. Sullenberger gained international fame and recognition after successfully landing a crippled airliner in the Hudson River after taking off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Following takeoff, the US Airways plane was hit by a flock of geese, causing the aircraft to lose power to both of it’s jet engines. The Tournament of Roses announced the selection on its Facebook “fan page” shortly after the announcement at the Tournament House in Pasadena.

football Sullenberger was raised in Denison, Texas and had a distinguished career flying aircraft for the military before becoming a commercial pilot. Sullenberger now has over 40 years of commercial flying experience, with the most recent 29 of those serving as a captain at US Airways.

Since the incident, Sullenberger has become an ad-hoc spokesman for airlines pilots and employees across the country, many of whom are underpaid and extremely overworked. His whistle-stop media tour has included appearances on most every major radio and T.V. network, including a recent stopover at local NPR affiliate KPCC to discuss the airline industry with “Air Talk” host Larry Mantle.2009_grandmarshal2

Last year, it was television’s Cloris Leachman who was given the honor of presiding over the popular parade, and past grand marshals have included actors, astronauts, writers, artists, athletes and political figures.

Early Grand Marshals were local heroes, many of them Tournament organizers. The first Grand Marshal from outside Pasadena was San Francisco Mayor James Rolph in 1930, and as the Tournament grew, so did the stature of its Grand Marshals. Mary Pickford, Earl Warren, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Gregory Peck, Bob Hope, Erma Bombeck, Henry "Hank" Aaron, the Apollo 12 astronauts, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Kate Smith, Gerald Ford, Lee Iaccoca, James Stewart, Pele and Angela Lansbury are just a few of the distinguished individuals who have held the honored position. 1966 Grand Marshal Walt Disney rode in the Parade with Mickey Mouse, and Edgar Bergen brought Charlie McCarthy along in 1940. Shirley Temple, who was a 10-year old movie star when she led the 50th Rose Parade returned as diplomat Shirley Temple Black to serve as Grand Marshal of the Tournament’s Centennial celebration in 1989.
