Financial strains and budget cuts have led Pasadena Heritage to cancel the annual summer Celebration on the Colorado Street Bridge which attracts thousands to the popular block party atop the iconic Pasadena Bridge.
Pasadena Heritage, a non-profit organization aimed at protecting and preserving Pasadena’s architectural legacy and cultural history, has reduced its operating budget from $700,000 to $500,000 this year, making this year’s Celebration a risky investment, which costs upwards of $100,000.
According to Sue Mossman, executive director of the preservation group, with Pasadena Heritage’s reduced staff, the event seemed too much to afford this year. In a message on the group’s website, organizers call for an alternative community celebration with a more conservative budget on July 18, the original date set for the event. For their part, Pasadena Heritage did promise that the traditional Saturday night party will be back next year.
Built in 1913, the bridge was closed in 1989 after the Loma Prieta Earthquake, and later reopened in 1993 following seismic restoration. The bridge is usually closed to traffic each year for the summer festival.
