The hugely atmospheric and historic San Gabriel Mission Playhouse once again plays host to another wonderful treat for lovers of silent movies this weekend when award-winning organist Clark Wilson provides live accompaniment to the classic 1928 romantic comedy The Cameraman starring Buster Keaton.
After becoming infatuated with a pretty office worker for MGM Newsreels, Buster trades in his tintype operation for a movie camera and sets out to impress the girl (and MGM) with his work.
Directed by Edward Sedgwick and Buster Keaton, the film was described in the New York Times by critic Mordaunt Hall, as “filled with guffaws and grins, the sort of thing with many original and adroitly worked-out gags.”
The Cameraman is number 353 on “They Shoot Pictures Don’t They?” 1,000 Greatest Movies of All Time and was added to the National Film Registry in 2005 as being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
A native of Ohio, Clark Wilson began his musical training at the age of nine. While growing up, he accompanied numerous stage musicals and was organist at several churches. At this time, he was listed in “Who’s Who in the Midwest.” He also holds Life Member status in the international Tri-M Music Honor Society.
He later assisted with the installation of the world’s largest Wurlitzer organ. He has performed at numerous National and Regional Theatre Organ conventions for the American Theatre Organ Society and has played many concerts in the USA, Canada, Australia and England. He is also featured organist for the Summer Movie Series at the famed Ohio Theatre in Columbus. OH.
Wilson is the only person to have received both Technician of the Year and Organist of the Year awards from the American Theatre Organ Society.
Built in 1927, the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse promotes the development of an artistic program that celebrates the vibrancy of our diverse community by encouraging access to artists, producers and audiences.
Located in the heart of a historic neighborhood, the Playhouse embraces its role as a focal point for the arts, for the people of the City of San Gabriel and far beyond. We are proud to be host to a remarkable and eclectic array of productions and events ranging from Chinese Classical Ballet to Ballet Folklorico, from Asian hip-hop to Classical Symphonies, from some of the best Mariachi bands in existence to stunning Broadway shows.
Clark Wilson accompanies the Silent Movie “The Cameraman” on Sun, May 9th at 2.30pm. Tickets: $16 (advance), $ 20 (door), available from www.latos.org or on the day of the show from the Box Office: San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, 320 South Mission Drive, San Gabriel CA, 91776.
