Bringing Thousands of Years of Chinese History to Life, Phoenix TV Aims to Introduce Shaanxi Province, the Cradle of Chinese civilization.
Irwindale-based Phoenix Satellite TV, a Chinese-language U.S. television station and subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Phoenix Group is working with the Committee of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, to introduce Shaanxi province, the cradle of Chinese civilization, by building a float for the 2010 Rose Parade in January.
At the parade, spectators will see the Terra Cotta Warriors on the Phoenix TV float. These “warriors” were life-size clay figures entombed with Emperor Qin Shihuangdi, to escort and protect him in the afterlife. Additionally, the float will feature artists from the Shaanxi Song and Dance Ensemble.
The art troupe will also give a stage performance on Jan.2 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. This show, consisting of song, dance, Kung Fu, and acrobatics will, according to the event’s organizers, “bring to life art forms dating back more than 1000 years.”
With a strong belief in the promotion of Chinese culture, the CEO of Phoenix Satellite TV (U.S.) Inc., Xiaoyong Wu said “Phoenix is strongly devoted to the promotion of Chinese culture and the mutual understanding between the Chinese and other nations of the world. The Tournament of Roses is an ideal platform for our purpose.”

Shaanxi is considered one of the cradles of Chinese civilization. Thirteen feudal dynasties established their capitals in the province during a span of more than 1,100 years, from the Zhou Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty.
“Phoenix TV faced a tough decision,” Xiaoyong continued, “because Chinese culture is so splendid and far-reaching, it is difficult to decide which aspect of Chinese culture to present. Eventually, we decided on featuring Shaanxi Province, the birth place of Chinese civilization.”
Xi’an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province, together with Athens, Rome, and Cairo were known as the four major ancient capitals of the world. In addition, Xi’an served as the capital of 13 Chinese dynasties. The ancient Silk Road, an extensive interconnected network of trade routes across the Asian continent connecting East, South, and Western Asia with the Mediterranean, as well as North and Northeast Africa and Europe, started in Xi’an and stretched westward.
